CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, Rolf Habben Jansen, stated on Monday that transatlantic shipping freight rates are under pressure due to weak demand, meaning shipping operators must focus on costs.
During a conference call with reporters, Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of the world's fifth-largest container shipping company, Hapag-Lloyd, said, "Freight rates have definitely plummeted, which means we have to start focusing on our costs, and costs have risen."
He cited increases in wages, fuel prices, terminal, and chartered ship costs, adding that concerns over costs could potentially lead to the cancellation of certain voyages.
