Ukraine is reintegrating into global container trade. More than 800 days after the war in Ukraine, global shipping lines are returning to Ukraine, even as the country’s ports continue to come under attack.
Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd became the first mainline operator to start offering container services to and from Ukraine this weekend, according to Alphaliner, while Ukrainian media also reported that Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will launch a feeder service between Turkey and Ukraine from next month.
Hapag-Lloyd will begin joining the Romania-Ukraine route operated by Iteris Feeders, a Ukrainian transport and logistics company based in Odessa, although MSC’s specific plans are unclear.
Odessa port infrastructure was hit by Russian missiles yesterday. Despite repeated attacks on maritime infrastructure, shipping flows out of Ukraine have rebounded significantly this year, mainly in dry bulk. In addition to grain exports, Ukrainian iron ore exports, mainly to China, have also grown significantly in recent months and have now returned to pre-war levels.
